Books you should read to help you understand Japan
Patrick McKenzie recommends these 3 books:
Patrick McKenzie says,
Essentialization is a persistent problem with most writing about foreign cultures. The best antidote for it ever with regards to Japan is an out-of-print book Making Common Sense of Japan. My single favourite recommendation for foreigners: An Introduction To Japanese Society, Sugimoto. The book is sweeping in breadth and does the best job I’ve ever seen at adequately representing the diversity of life here for a foreign audience. And, if you are looking for a book about Japanese real estate in English, check out Landed Japan by Christopher Dillon.
